June 2017

Another successful year has almost come to an end for our Home and School Association. Thanks to your generosity, the HSA was able to continue funding various enrichment programs for our students. This year our favorite program was Cliff and the Honey Bees.  Teachers told us it was the best assembly they have ever seen.  Students are still working on projects to save the bees months after the presentation. Our students enjoyed many field trips this year, the Circus came to town, the Science Fair was amazing and the Mayfair was a success even in the rain... Travell is a great place to be and all of you made this happen.

We also were able to fulfill many teacher wishlist items this spring including ukeleles for our music program, a very well received author visit, and materials to enhance curriculum.

And finally, over the summer we will be adding to our playground. The addition of a piece geared toward younger students will make the playground more suitable for the addition of the full day kindergartners. Installing an additional piece will also provide more space for everyone to play.  A third picnic table will be installed to the current picnic area to provide an entire class of children outside seating. We envision outdoor class time and special lunch time enjoyment.

Thank you for responding to the long term planning survey. The responses to the long term planning survey were helpful in guiding this initial spending as well as formulating a list of future goals. Ideas included an ampitheatre, improved track, greenhouse, and ecology center to name a few.  Do you have more ideas? Please let us know! The long range planning committee is meeting over the summer to come up with future spending goals which will be presented at our first general meeting on Friday, September 29th at 9am.  All members of the HSA are encouraged to attend and share their ideas at HSA meetings and we are always open to hearing suggestions and ideas. Please see the playground rendering.

Have a great summer!

June 13, 2017

As summer approaches, we want to remind you about the importance of reading over the summer vacation. All of us are so proud of the progress our students have made as readers that we’d hate to see any of them suffer from summer reading setback. "Children who do not read in the summer lose two to three months of reading development.” (Allington, 2012). No matter what children accomplish during the school year, if they don’t read over the summer, their learning stalls or regresses (Cooper, Borman, & Fairchild, 2010). The good news is that reading even six books over the summer can maintain a reading level. Reading more than ten books can not only maintain but improve their reading skills. Reading is a wonderful way to stave off summer boredom and increase students’ vocabulary acquisition, fluency, and background knowledge.

We hope you will partner with us in encouraging your child to read consistently throughout the summer months. It makes a difference. Enjoy a wonderful summer of rest, relaxation and a little reading!

Figits, small handheld toys, are all the rage at school. They are designed to help with stress, attention and focus issues. However, it seems they are more of a distraction than a help so we are asking you to keep them at home.

A message from Dr. Leininger:
For the safety of all our children, please help us.
  • Do not let children out into the middle of the street. Drop them on the curb side even if they need to crawl over car seats.
  • Do not make U turns on Bogert or Fairfield.
  • Do not double park. Doing so requires children to walk between parked cars.
  • Do not block our neighbor's driveways. They need to be able to get in and out of their driveways.
  • Do supervise your children on the playground, at drop off and pick up.
  • Use the crosswalks and, whenever possible, walk to school.

A message from Dr. Leininger:
We ask all parents that if you are going away and leaving your child in the care of a grandparent, friend, neighbor, aunt, etc., please let us know and make sure that their name is on the release form in Skyward.  If your child should become ill, we don't want to spoil your vacation in the islands by calling you long distance!

Currently there are three “party themes” which we celebrate at school: Halloween, the Winter Holidays and Valentine's Day. We will offer food for these holidays only as long as it meets the Ridgewood School’s Healthy Snack List. Candy, foods or beverages where sugar is the first ingredient or food of minimal nutritional value may not be served or given out. Valentines with candy inside will be sent home. We have children who are allergic to different kinds of foods, are diabetic, or cannot tolerate gluten. Speak with your child's teacher or Mrs. Caruso if you have any concerns. Thank you for understanding. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday! A message from Mrs. Caruso:
